If you’ve spent much time here at my blog, it should come as no surprise that I am an avid Dollar Tree shopper. Did you know that Dollar Tree has a loyalty program? It’s called The Value Seekers Club, and in addition to tips, contests, and VIP sneak peeks of new merchandise, it is also a great place to find lots of crafty inspiration using Dollar Tree products!
Among the many great holiday craft ideas that The Value Seekers Club has to offer, I found instructions for cinnamon scented stars. These pretty potpourri ornaments are a classic craft, made out of a dough consisting of applesauce and cinnamon. Since you can find everything you need to make these at Dollar Tree, and for only $1 per item, you can whip up a whole bunch of lovely potpourri ornaments on a very small budget.
For my own potpourri ornaments, I made a couple of minor changes to their directions. I started out with some homemade apple/pear sauce instead of store bought. We had a bumper crop of pears last year but they were very gritty and we thought perhaps if we thinned them down with apples they might be more palatable, but alas it still felt like eating a mouthful of sand. But we canned it and put it on the shelf anyway, hoping that a good use for it would come along. And this was the PERFECT project for that barely-edible sauce!
I also found a big container of ground cloves at my local Dollar Tree and replaced a portion of the cinnamon in the recipe with the cloves instead. The smell of cloves reminds me of my grandma, who always had a pomander ball hanging in her bathroom!
Rather than making stars, I made hearts, mainly because that is what I happened to have on hand for a cookie cutter. I also gave mine a bit of embellishment with puffy paint. I’m super happy with how they turned out! To make your own, stop by The Value Seekers Club for the recipe and directions!
