I have an ongoing love affair with Duck Tape® as a craft supply. With so many fun colors and patterns and endless ways to use them, how could I not? (And did you know that you can buy Duck Tape at Walmart? Don’t forget to grab some on your next shopping trip!) One of my favorite things about it is that it is a super easy way to add interesting details to just about anything under the sun, creating simple and high-impact designs. How simple? It only took me abuot 10 minutes to turn a cookie sheet into this fun magnetic memo board! This is just one example of how you can incorporate Duck Tape® into your back-to-school projects; I think this would be a great addition to dorm room decor!
You will need:
- Cookie sheet
- Duck Tape®
- Craft knife or utility knife
When selecting a cookie sheet for this project, make sure that you use one that is made out of steel, not aluminum, or magnets will not stick to it. If you’re not sure, take a magnet with you to the store to test the cookie sheets. (Most of the time, though, it should say somewhere on the label what type of metal was used to make it.)
Starting along one edge of the cookie sheet, cover the surface with strips of Duck Tape®. Depending on the pattern you choose, it may or may not line up easily; the heart pattern I worked with was a little bit difficult to line up so I just got it “close enough” – since you’ll be attaching memos and other whatnots to the finished board, you won’t really notice slight imperfections that much. Use your fingernail or the edge of a credit card to smooth out the seams and work out any air bubbles.
Once the surface is completely covered, use a craft knife or utility knife to trim away the excess tape from around the edges. Peel away the excess and your memo board is done! You can mount it on the wall of you wish, but in the interest of dorm-friendly projects I chose to display mine on a wire picture frame holder. No need to stop there either – you can use Duck Tape® in the same or coordinating patterns or colors to decorate other dorm room items as well to create a whole matching decor set!
