A while back my local Dollar Tree got in a shipment of little wooden boxes. They’re plain boxes with hinged lids and magnetic closures – a really neat find for $1. So of course I picked up a whole stack of them! The other day I came across the pile and decided it was about time that I do something with them. After a little brainstorming, I came up with the idea to paint one to look like a slice of watermelon. Cute, right? If you want to make your own, here’s how.
You will need:
- Wooden box
- Craft paint
- Paintbrush
I used DecoArt Patio Paints because I had them on hand in the right colors. They’re actually formulated for outdoor use, but I decided to use them on this project anyway because they have such awesome coverage on unprimed wood. To make a slice of watermelon you will need green, pink, white, and black paints.
Start by giving the whole box a base coat of green paint. If needed, apply a second coat as well to even out the coverage.
When the green paint is dry, paint three sides of the box with white paint. Leave a border of green around three of the edges to give it the look of a watermelon rind.
Do the same thing using pink paint, leaving a thin stripe of white showing all the way around. Now it’s starting to look like watermelon!
Use black paint to add teardrop-shaped seeds. I just added some to the top of my box, but if you want you can go crazy and add them to the bottom and the front edge as well.
If you’re really feeling painty, you can also carry the color scheme into the inside of the box!
[…] a yummy recipe. This was partly because I love any excuse to eat watermelon, and partly because I already made a watermelon craft recently so a recipe would make for a nice variety of watermelon ideas. We’ve been grilling a lot of […]
