This week’s challenge for Iron Craft was to make a coffee cozy. What a perfect crochet project! I made mine to look like a cup of tea, with an applique-and-embroidery tag and string on the side. I also gave it a non-slip backing, so it won’t slide around precariously on my mug while keeping it warm.
For this project I used worsted weight acrylic yarn from the bowels of my stash. Normally I would have used a size H or I hook with this yarn, but I used a G hook instead to make the stitches tighter and more insulating. For the backing, you will need a small piece of rubberized shelf liner.
To make the body of the cozy, make a chain that is about 9 1/2 inches long. Turn and work in even rows of sc until your piece is about 3 inches tall. Fasten off and weave in ends.
To make the button flap:
R1: Ch 6; turn and sc in each st across starting with 2nd ch from hook, turn, ch1. (5 st)
R2-9:Â Sc in each st across, turn, ch1.
R10:Â Sc in first sc; ch 2, sk next 3 st; sc in last sc of previous row, turn, ch 1.
R11:Â Â Sc in first sc, sc 2 in ch sp, sc in last sc of previous row, turn. ch 1.
R12: Sc in first sc, sc2tog, sc in last sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Sew the button flap and a button to the body of the mug cozy.
Crochet a one-inch square with light brown yarn. Leave a long tail for sewing.
Sew the square to the mug cozy.
Use white yarn to embroider the teabag string.
Cut a piece of shelf liner that is slightly smaller than the dimensions of the body of the mug cozy. Use yarn in the color of the cozy’s body to sew it to the back side of the cozy.
Ta-da! You’re ready for a nice cup of your favorite hot beverage!
Too cute! Thanks for sharing :^)
Oh this makes me wish I knew how to crochet. 🙂
this is so cute!
I just finished crocheting this! This is my first project after 10+ years of not crocheting. I’m going to try to embroider a robot onto my cozy. Thanks so much for this easy to understand patter, I love it. I’m going to be making so many of these as gifts!
Thanks for easy directions! I just crocheted one. Now I want to make a bunch but first buy some fun buttons.
very clever pattern! thanks for sharing it 😉
this is the cutest thing ever! I think I have all the materials to do this too. My mothers is always drinking coffee or tea and this is precious. Can’t wait to try it out!! Thanks so much!
SHELF LINER! You’re a genius. I’ve been making coffee cozies & kept wondering why I would want them on my glass mugs when they slipped off so easily. Shelf liner on the back is the perfect solution!
Lovely, lovely :). Thanks!
I have done the shelf liners for slippers. Great minds think alike!
I just made one of these for my sister who loves tea in the evenings. I used some turquoise from my stash and added a cream border to the cosy and the button flap. Thanks so much for the pattern. It was very easy to read and came out so cute. I especially like the tea bag applique!
I’d like to feature your pattern on Moogly next week. I’ll include a link to the pattern and a photo, but never the written pattern itself. Please let me know if you have any objections!
I always wondered what to use for the cozy not to slip ! Thank you so much for this clever idea, I’ll be on my way to the shops to get some shelf liner as soon as the sun goes up 🙂
why didn’t you tell us how to make the body of the cozy?
YES, I did provide those instructions.
