While I was shopping the after-Christmas clearance sales recently, I came across a couple of little jar candles that were so cheap I couldn’t pass them up. I knew that I wanted to use them for a Valentine’s Day project – after all, Valentine’s Day is all about romance, and what is more romantic than scented candles? – but I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to go with them. Oh, and it doesn’t hurt that they are one of the best household odor eliminator there is! That is, until I spotted these adorable cupcake rubber stamps! They were just the perfect embellishment for the job!
I am a member of the PSA Essentials Design Team. I received complimentary PSA Essentials products in exchange for creating project ideas.
You will need:
- Jar candle
- Rubber stamps (I used the PSA Essentials Whimsy Cakes stamp set)
- Tissue paper
- Matte Mod Podge
- Sparkle Mod Podge
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Paint brush
The candles started out as Christmas candles. But once you remove the label, they are just plain ol’ white candles!
I peeled mine off most of the way with my fingernails, then got rid of any left over reside with some citrus-based cleaner, which is excellent for removing sticky stuff. Make sure you rinse and dry the jar well after you use the cleaner.
Cut a piece of tissue paper the right size to wrap around the jar and stamp a design onto it. Use colored pencils to fill in the design.
Paint a medium-thick coat of Matte Mod Podge around the outside of the jar candle and carefully wrap the tissue paper around it, gently patting into place. Be very careful with the tissue paper at this stage, because once it is saturated with Mod Podge it will tear easily! Let this coat of Mod Podge dry for 10 to 15 minutes to make sure the tissue paper is firmly affixed.
Paint the entire outside of the jar with at least one coat of sparkle Mod Podge. (A second coat is helpful to even out any thin places in the finish or to add even more sparkle, but might not be necessary.) Be sure to Mod Podge the jar lid separately from the rest of the jar so that you don’t accidentally seal the candle shut.
When the Mod Podge is dry, finish by tying a length of ribbon around the top of the jar. Adorable, right? And I just adore the Whimsy Cakes stamp set – I think I will have to do more Valentine’s Day projects with them!
